Visakha Bucha Day (aka, Visakha Puja Day), is another important religious Thai holiday commemorating the birth, enlightenment (nirvana) and passing (parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha. It is informally called Buddha’s birthday.

On this day, followers honor the Triple Gems: Buddha, his teachings, and his disciples.  Religious flags are flown and ceremonies and merit-makings take place at temples.  Devotees bring offerings of flowers, candles, and joss sticks — reminders that just as flowers wither and candles & incense burn out, so too does life. Because of that, followers are encouraged to refrain from any kind of killing (insects, animals for meat, etc).
